A good honest post Side.
I'd prefer a better DM but Soucek is what we have. I realised a long time ago that a dedicated defender is often better than a creative player to protect the CB's.
Some fans are unfortunately blinded by loyalty to the anti-Soucek rhetoric that Eerie himself started quite a while ago now. He was shit a lot last year and does have limited ability. However, he is not a priority to change just yet.
I think we need another manager, LB, RB, CB, 2 or 3 in midfield and at least 1 or 2 decent forwards before worrying about fucking Soucek...

I see both sides of this argument about Soucek….when he had that first season scoring goals he often changed the result for the better for us and his weak areas didn’t matter….now without the goals focus is more around his all round game which is now judged on more defensive duties….his problem is those goals from midfield haven’t been replaced and he’s for some reason blamed for that when the likes of Paqueta are now here to play that role….and it was never really his game so he is harshly judged at times imo….

I blame Moyes for only getting a draw but I am not so blinded by hatred for Soucek and Moyes like you are that I can’t accept that Soucek did play well yesterday.

He's going to be starting every single game in every competition unless he breaks at least one of his legs, lets see how he is holding up next May.

Until we improve and piss poor football players like him, we'll carry on being as shit as we have been for nearly 2 years. I'm glad you're celebrating such average standards against one of the worst teams we'll play. I have higher standards than you.

I wasn’t ‘trying’ to say anything other than what I said. Anyone judging Soucek’s effectiveness by only 16 completed passes is ignoring all the other good stuff he did.
We all agree Soucek is a limited footballer but he had a good game against Bournemouth doing a lot of the hard miles of closing down, competing for headers and clearances. He really did cover a lot of ground and almost scored. He provided the pass for Bowen to score.
So perhaps you’ll forgive me for saying that I don’t understand why ‘fans’ get blinded to the good things because they have been posting regularly that a player is crap.
Same as you Miike. I expected Downes to get a chance when Soucek went through a bad spell but Moyes obviously has decided that Downes isn’t ever going to be as effective as Soucek. I think he’s going to Southampton.
Downes should have been given a chance imo We guess it’s because he wasn’t a Moyes choice but we don’t know that Moyes thinks he’s just not good enough from seeing him daily in training.

Tell, I get what you're 'trying' to say. Seriously.
What has happened though, is because this manager has sucked the life out of us fans with our league form for nearly 2 years, our expectations of what we should expect from our players is rock bottom. Low hanging fruit.
Soucek didn't have a good game, as in what you should expect from a Premier League footballer. He had a good game in comparison to the absolute dirge he has served up over a long period of time.

The 7 clearances and heading in our own penalty area are not the kind of highlights I want to take from a Premier League game against Bournemouth, but to each their own.

we have a DM who can tackle, and can pass the ball (one of the best in the Championship before he joined us). the problem is the cunt of a manager hates him, and when he does get a chance has to have that lumbering donkey next to him, or he plays out of position (wide, or number ten). keep ignoring why certain players never get a fair go, the cult grows stronger behind that footballing dinosaur

Just because some of us don’t slag off Soucek for only completing 16 passes doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t much rather have a better player at DM.
But he’s what we have for now so I am happy to take into account his other defensive abilities rather than count on Paqueta and Fornals to defend the midfield area in front of the back 4 for instance.

I dont think he should be anywhere near the DM role. he's not great at tackling, his first touch is poor and his passing deficiencies would constantly put us under pressure. Let's celebrate though that he finally earned his wages for the first time in eighteen months

That’s a ridiculous comment
If Bowen was a centrehalf and he can’t win a header or you said he can’t cross or dribble then your analogy might carry some weight, or you picked a defender that can’t tackle or a striker that can’t shoot.
Soucek is a central midfielder part of the remit is to be able to pass the ball. I hear people saying we play too long and don’t pass out from the back but he is the main reason why when one of your two holding midfielders can’t receive the ball with anyone near him or he’ll almost certainly give it away hence the reason if we can’t get the ball to one of the others we tend to boot it straight over their heads.
It makes me laugh as well when people blame it on trying to push Rice forward, it’s a crock of shit he’s played exactly the same yesterday as he has since the day he got here, the only difference is in the first 12 months he was here one of the two free headers or the chance he had from 8 yards out would of gone in and nobody would of brought up the fact he completed 16 fucking passes in a game we pretty much dominated for 60 mins. I don’t understand how that’s even possible from a central midfielder.
People talk about JWP being a one trick pony with his set pieces but he delivers consistently and he’s not Paqueta but he can play this bloke without goals is absolutely useless Delli Ali MKll

Except you are putting a false conclusion to us to make yourself feel better.
Soucek isn’t my idea of a good footballer either. But he can be a useful DM. I just don’t use one of several metrics in isolation just because it confirms your conviction that he’s shit.

I definitely do use the metrics of passing ability when judging footballers, I'm guilty of that charge. Especially central midfielders, I see it as a fundamental.
However, I'm glad for the pair of you that you don't. It's not a bad way to see the game if you support West Ham with our current manager. I genuinely wish my expectations were as low as yours.

I particularly watched Soucek having said that I had a feeling he'd be much better this season and he definitely had a good game.
Only 1 passes eh? Yes he made 26 with a 62% success but why use that metric to judge a DM on?
Soucek also won more aerial duels than anyone on either side. He also got an assist; 2 shots; 1 key pass; hit the post; 5 tackles;1 dribble; 7 clearances and was 'everywhere' according to the commentators.
Someone said that his 'heat map' (where he was on the pitch and distance covered) was particularly impressive. But yes he only completed 16 passes...

ED you can pick and choose your stats however you like. It's like me pulling up how many aerial duals Bowen won. I get it that you want a ball playing midfielder. From what I witnessed I'd be surprised if anyone had decent pass completion stats. Everyone was guilty of constantly giving away the ball. Fact is Soucek made the key pass for Bowen to score.
